Maintaining a stunning lawn takes time and money, especially since it can add significant curb appeal and value to your home. Unfortunately, many homeowners eventually deal with underground rodent problems. Voles not only wreak havoc on your lawn and landscaping but they’re often confused for moles or other rodents. So, here are some signs you have voles, and why you should call Nature’s Select Sandhills for help.

Cracks in the Ground

Voles tunnel through your lawn, looking for food sources. Their pathways create distinct cracks or crevices in the surface of your yard, making it easy to identify a vole problem. You'll also notice holes throughout your lawn, a good indication you have voles. Unlike moles, voles don't live underground; they just use tunneling as a way to get around. So, they create golf-ball-sized holes throughout your lawn to come and go as they please.

Your Flowers Die Easily

Voles are omnivores, which means they look for vegetation, roots, bulbs, and plants to feed on. If you start to notice that your plants and flowers are dying in your flower bed, you've likely got voles. These rodents will also chew on the bases of young trees, which can destroy them and cause them to die. Whiles voles do have a short lifespan, they reproduce quickly. Therefore, you'll want to get this problem fixed at the first sign of destruction.

Voles Look Like Field Mice

If you have voles, you've likely seen them but thought they were field mice. Voles and field mice have similar characteristics, including tails, compact little bodies, short snouts, and tiny ears. At a glance, you might not be able to tell the difference between the two. However, identifying your culprit isn't hard when you couple these characteristics with all the dead flowers, plant destruction, and runways in your lawn.
