Spring is now in the rearview mirror and sweltering summer days will soon be the norm here in North Carolina, where keeping your lawn green can be a real challenge! Luckily, your friends at Nature’s Select® are up to that challenge! We know that caring for your lawn in extreme heat takes the right watering, heat, and nutrition; and we’re here to help.
Many homeowners do not change the way they mow based on the season. However, spring and summer are not the same and your lawn has different needs. So while you may have gotten in the habit of mowing once or twice a week through the spring, it may be better for your lawn to only mow once a week or even every other week in the summer. Additionally, it's important not to cut your grass too short. While you may think it'll give you more time between mowings, it can actually reduce your lawn's ability to produce energy for growth. A good rule of thumb is to remove no more than 1/3 of the grass length at a time.
Another common misconception about caring for grass in the summer months is that you'll need to water more than usual. However, overwatering can be just as bad for your lawn as not watering enough. Watering too much and too often can create shallow roots and promote disease development, due to the constant wetness and humidity. For best results, check the grass and soil for dryness, and then water as needed. We like to use the screwdriver test to determine the moisture needs of your lawn and then water accordingly.
Finally, be sure to adjust the way you fertilize during the summer months. At Nature's Select®, we apply only lime and organic material to the lawn and control for weeds as needed, because your lawn mostly needs to conserve energy in extreme heat. The best way to keep your lawn healthy is by mulching your grass and letting it naturally fertilize your lawn.
