Top 3 Spring Mowing Tips

Spring is finally here in North Carolina, and homeowners are getting their mowers out of storage for the year. While mowing may seem like a no-brainer, there’s actually an art to it. And, properly mowed lawns will be healthier in the long term. Our team at Nature’s Select® understands the importance of a healthy lawn, so we’ve put together a list of lawn maintenance tips to help you get ready for spring.

1. Never Scalp Your Lawn

Scalping your grass is letting the grass grow tall and then removing more than one-third of the leaf blade. Mowing the lawn this way can cause undue stress to the grass, especially during the summer heat when the grass is already stressed. Scalping your lawn will make the plant stop root growth to put all its energies into above-ground growth, further weakening the plant.

2. Maintain Your Mower

During the growing season of the year, it's important to sharpen your lawn mower blades several times. Dull blades can shred grass and cause discoloration at the tips. Additionally, be sure you're using your mower at the correct height. During the first couple of mows of the season, keep the height lower to remove any dead grass blades. Then, raise it slightly when your lawn is recovering from any damage like drought, insect damage, or disease.

3. Pay Attention to Weather and Frequency

We know it can be hard to find the time to mow your lawn and often the weather doesn't cooperate with your schedule. However, it's important to avoid cutting your grass when it is wet. This can lead to brown spots that result from clippings clumping together and smothering your lawn. The ideal frequency for cutting your lawn is dependent on the growth of your grass. But, as mentioned above, don’t cut more than a one-third of the grass blade in one mowing.
